When people hear that I’m a behavioral nutritionist and ADHD clinical services provider, they often ask, “So… what do you “actually” do with ADHD clients? Is it just, like, less sugar?”
If only it were that simple. I’ve spent 30 years in the field of Behavioral Nutrition, and the last 22 years as a parent of children with ADHD. I don’t just know the science; I’ve lived the Googling, the school meetings, the trial-and-error, the “why does everyone else’s kid seem easier to feed, or better yet, easier to support?” spiral.
My work now is the combination of that lived experience and my clinical training: I help people with ADHD use food, routines, and gentle structure to feel more at home in their bodies and more in charge of their lives. It is all about connecting the brain to the body.
The approach is gentle, collaborative, and creative.
Let me walk you through what that looks like in my practice, starting where ADHD really lives, in real life!!
When a new client comes in, we don’t start with a list of what to eat and what not to eat, we start with, what does life currently look like for you? Perhaps….
- skipped breakfast and chaotic evenings
- executive function mishaps that make meal planning/everything feel impossible
- sensory issues that make certain textures a barrier from the get-go
- history of dieting, shame, or feeling “too much” or “not enough”
I take an Inventory
I ask a lot of questions about patterns, energy, focus, sleep, digestion, mood, and how food fits/or not into their days. What I love is there is often laughter! ADHD brains are creative, nonlinear, and delightfully honest. We use that, not fight it. It is a gift and a blessing and can be so fun, BUT many of my clients come to me exhausted, wired, and feeling like their bodies are working against them. That alone can make it harder to manage ADHD symptoms or the motivation to make changes, especially with the diet.
One pillar of my work is an anti-inflammatory way of eating, that is:
- Rich in whole, colorful foods (fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices)
- Supportive of blood sugar balance (protein, healthy fats, and fiber so they’re not riding the glucose roller coaster all day)
- Gentle on the gut (because the gut–brain connection is very real, especially in neurodivergent bodies)
- Low in ultra-processed, high-additive foods when feasible, without perfectionism
We experiment together. Some clients notice they feel calmer and clearer with fewer big blood sugar swings. Others find that certain patterns of eating help reduce that “internal static” that makes focusing so hard.
I don’t promise miracles, but I’ve seen people go from “I’m always on edge and exhausted” to “I didn’t realize I could feel this settled in my own skin.”
Systems: The Secret Ingredient No One Talks About
Here’s the thing: ADHD is not a lack of knowing what to do. It’s a challenge of doing what you know consistently.
That’s why I spend just as much time on systems as I do on nutrients.
Together, we build:
- Easy meal frameworks instead of rigid meal plans
- Routines that fit their brain, like “one prep session, three easy mix-and-match meals”
- Visual cues and anchors (because if it’s out of sight, it might as well not exist)
- Backup options for the days when everything goes sideways (because they will)
Clients often tell me, “For the first time, I feel like my life is set up to support me, not constantly work against me.”
That’s my goal: to make the healthy choice the easy choice, and to co-create the systems to be so forgiving that even an ADHD-style week can’t completely derail it.
Supplementation for Sensitive Systems
A surprising number of people with ADHD are highly sensitive to medications and to supplements that other people seem to tolerate just fine.
Some of my clients arrive with a long history of “I tried X and felt awful,” or “I’m so sensitive; I’m afraid to try anything new.”
For those clients, I create very personalized supplementation protocols, grounded in:
- Their symptoms and history
- Their dietary intake
- Their nervous system sensitivity
We go slowly. We watch closely. And we adjust as needed.
Some clients who’ve always felt “too sensitive for everything” have shared that, with care and customization, they’re finally finding support that doesn’t make them feel worse. It’s not magic; it’s matching the intervention to the individual instead of trying to squeeze them into a template.
What Clients Are Telling Me
Since starting this focused ADHD work, I’ve heard things like:
- “I feel more connected to my body instead of at war with it.”
- “I’m calmer, and I don’t lose the whole day to one unexpected curveball.”
- “I’m actually able to follow through on my priorities instead of just reacting all day.”
Do I take full credit? No. This is not about me, but about their willingness and readiness to try something new and to ask for support. Many of my clients are also in therapy, taking medication, or working with other providers. I see how powerful it is when nutrition and systems are integrated with other providers and with how their brains finally light up “on-line”. It’s like someone quietly removed 20 pounds of invisible weight they’d been carrying around for years.
A Final Word
If you live with ADHD, you’ve probably heard a lifetime’s worth of advice that is given with good intention, like:
- “Just try harder.”
- “You just need more discipline.”
- “Have you tried a planner?”
My work is the opposite of that.
I assume you’ve already been trying very hard. I assume you’ve already been given many different systems that were clearly designed for a non-ADHD brain, and I assume you’re probably a lot more resilient and brilliant than you give yourself credit for.
What I offer is compassionate, evidence-informed partnership: using behavioral nutrition, practical systems, and a bit of humor to help you feel more peaceful in your body and more capable in your life. I GET IT!!!
And no, I will never ask you to give up coffee, or whatever you feel makes you feel normal until you are ready, and if that is never, we will work around it.
If this feels like a nudge for support, please book a complimentary call with me HERE to learn more about my process an how I can support you. There is no NORMAL only individual brilliance and function in this linear world, and I would like to help. I would also like to offer an incredible article that has been a guidepost in my journey and training. I hope you find it helpful. Understanding the ADHD Brain
