If you’ve ever wondered why changing your eating habits can feel so challenging, you’re not alone. That’s where Behavioral Nutrition Therapy (BNT) comes in—a holistic, evidence-based approach that blends nutritional science with psychology and behavior change strategies.
Unlike traditional nutrition counseling, which often focuses on what to eat, BNT helps you explore the why and how behind your food choices—not just the what. It’s about understanding your relationship with food, your habits, and the emotional and psychological factors that influence your eating, from your past and present, so you can create a new relationship moving forward.
If you think about it, our behaviors around food begin the minute we exit the womb. From that day forward, the memories, the modeling, the habits are developed. What is your earliest memory of food? For me, it was cooking in the kitchen with my Grandmother every Saturday morning. I loved it and I looked forward to it. AND, she was very particular about me not eating potatoes and getting seconds because she said I would get fat. Both memories are true AND have very different emotions attached to them. If anything, confusion and some shame were developed at a very young age that impacted my relationship with food for a very long time.
This is just one example of what BNT can help people understand about their patterns. In more general terms, for some, food represents their only source of love, so overeating or comfort eating has been their behavior. For others, it may have been chaotic at the dinner table because of family dynamics or addiction that created a fear of food. Finally, for others, food may have been scarce and now accumulating or hoarding food may be an issue.
Whatever the behaviors attached to eating patterns, these behaviors are typically showing up in other areas of your life—substance abuse, overspending or financial problems, or perhaps poor body image and lack of self-worth.
That’s where I come in. Together, we’ll explore what I call a food biography, where you detail out your earliest memories of food and your memories at each stage of your life. We look for patterns and associations that help you understand WHY, so you can see where you are now and where you truly want to go. Through a thoughtful blend of clinical insight, practical recommendations, and mindfulness, I will help you understand the WHY so that we can craft personalized strategies to help you create new behaviors that reshape your neural pathways—serving you right here, right now, and moving forward. This is the essence of MOTIVATE MASTER MAINTAIN – Motivate from understanding the WHY, Master the new behavior, and Maintain for sustainability!
